Day 1: Arrival in Oslo

Norway's rapidly growing capital, Oslo is still considered a tiny city, helped by the fact that it is surrounded by majestic mountains and sea. Not only is the city center made for wandering, but the outlying neighborhoods are also packed with charm and character and are easily accessible as well. So jump on a train, tram or bus and explore all that Oslo has to offer.

Things to do in Oslo

  • Wander around Aker Brygge, which is an area on the Oslofjord made up of gorgeous, modern buildings where you can find plenty of bars and buzzing nightlife. It is a kind of courtyard for the Oslo city and brings together both visitors and locals alike to relish the great food, atmosphere, and entertainment.

  • Spend the afternoon visiting the Norwegian Open-Air Folk Museum and the Viking Ship Museum. Both museums are located in the same area, and so pair well together!

  • Stroll along the Havnepromenaden (harbor promenade), which is a new five-and-a-half-mile waterfront park, which blends history, art, sightseeing, architecture, with a little bit of adventure.

  • Visit the Vigeland Sculpture Park, where 200 majestic sculptures are placed throughout this green lung in the middle of the city. The sculptures portray the ups and downs of life and the natural emotions of human beings. Make sure to bring your camera with you!

Day 2: Heading to Bergen

This cobblestoned quay city, which is one of the oldest ports in Europe, is situated on the west coast and is surrounded by mountains, ocean, and fjords, including Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest.

If you have some time, do board a ride to the Floibanen funicular to the top of Mount Floyen, which is one of the seven peaks of Bergen for the most amazing views of the city. Take a leisurely walk back down the path while discovering hidden troll sculptures en route.

Also, check out the Bryggen area of downtown to witness the gorgeous waterfront wooden houses characterizing the city, dating back to the 1700s  and is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This walkable city possesses a wide selection of cultural and outdoor activities, not to mention charming restaurants and nightlife thanks to a young student population here.

Here is a list of some of the amazing local options:

  • BarBarista - a trendy coffee shop, restaurant, and music venue.

  • Bryggeloftet & Stuene - a traditional restaurant in the mountain.

  • Zupperia - an eclectic European restaurant situated right on the Bryggen wharf.

  • Bare Vestland - a basement-level eatery which specializes in Norwegian tapas.

  • Pygmalion Okocafe and Galleri - a healthy, organic restaurant situated in a historic space having a fireplace and an art gallery for some amazing art exhibitions and live music.

  • Matborsen - Three restaurants in one which serves international cuisine in a wonderful, airy space.

Day 3: Exploring Bergen

Today morning, you’ll meet up with a local for a tailored private tour of Bergen. Your guide, who is a local, will design the right tour for you as per your interests. Here are some common walk or hike ideas that many travelers enjoy here:

  • Hike Mt. Sandviken: This hike takes 2.5 hours and heads to Mt. Sandviken, which is one of the seven mountains surrounding the city. This also includes a visit to Stoltzekliven, which is a local favorite consisting of 900 steps constructed by sherpas from Nepal. This trail is home to the steepest race in the globe and features splendid views from the top!

  • Walk Through History: This walk takes 3 hours, starting from the city center and traveling through narrow streets up to the mountainside known as “Sandviksbatteriet” with awe-inspiring views over the city. From here, the trail takes you to a tiny, hidden cabin rich in World War II history. During the walk, your guide will narrate local tales of the city’s history and culture.

  • Hike Three of Seven Mountains: This hike is longer which takes 5-7 hours. On this hike, you will have the chance to climb three of the seven mountains that surround Bergen - Mt. Ulriken, Mt. Rundemannen, and Mt. Floyen. You’ll be served lunch at a picturesque spot along with the Norwegian treat “Kvikk Lunsj”, including coffee or tea.

The remaining of the day is entirely yours to continue exploring the city at your own pace. You'll also be equipped with a 24-Hour Bergen Card which will allow you free bus travel and free admittance to most of the museums and also other attractions, so enjoy to the fullest!

Day 4: A Train Ride to Flam

This morning, board a ride on the Flam Railway, which is considered one of the most gorgeous train rides in the world. The journey is steep in places and crosses through waterfalls and spectacular landscapes, so keep your camera handy.

On reaching the quaint village of Flam, just sit back for some time, relishing lunch at a cafe.

Enjoy the calm nature or go for a walk through town before you board your mid-afternoon scenic ferry ride back to Bergen by way of the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord of Norway.

You'll return back with enough time to have a late dinner and explore the city of Bergen at night.

Day 5: A Cruise Ride Through Fjord to Mostraumen

Today, your boat will depart from Bergen's port, taking you through a deep fjord via Mostraumen strait to Modalen, which is one of the smallest municipalities in the country with only 380 residents!

You will sail along the 16-mile Osterfjorden passing prominent fjords, steep mountains, and gorgeous waterfalls. Grab a spot on one of the sundecks to capture the stunning views. Your captain will also sail the boat's bow right up to a cascading waterfall to get a splash of ice-cold mountain water before it takes a turn around in Modalen and retraces the glorious landscape.

The cruise ride will take about three hours, and the remaining of the day is entirely yours to further explore the city.

Day 6: Departure Back Home

It's time to bid a final farewell to Norway! Enjoy your last moments in this wonderful city with a leisurely neighborhood stroll, and souvenir shopping before heading to the international airport for your return flight back home.
