Argentina is famous for its traditional cuisine and flavorsome wines, and this Latin America journey lets you discover exactly why it's so celebrated! You will also have the opportunity to visit a number of culture-rich villages and some of northern Argentina's most magnificent landscapes where colorful rock formations leave a permanent impression. Your tour begins in the colonial city of Salta where you can enjoy the wonderful architecture and local markets. Next, travel to the Los Conchas Gorge where you'll meet local artisans. Relish wine in the vineyards in Calafate Valley and stroll through the famous Humahuaca Gorge. Your journey ends with an Andean cooking class where you'll learn the secret to a traditional Tamale. Each day is packed with plenty of opportunities to experiment with local dishes and wines of Argentina.
Day 1 - Arrive Buenos Aires
Welcome to Buenos Aires. On your arrival in Argentina today, we will transfer you independently to your comfortable hotel. Enjoy your free time exploring the beautiful architecture of Buenos Aires, or just relax after your long international flight. As it is difficult to imagine a visit to Buenos Aires without visiting a tango show, so tonight we will arrange a visit to a tango show. Enjoy the show and experience a wonderful dinner before you head back to your hotel.
Day 2 - Salta
This morning we will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Salta, generally referred to as "Salta the Beautiful." The city is a gem of a colonial city in the Lerma Valley. True criollos (native Argentineans in Spanish lineage) live in colonial Salta and follow a culture that has remained traditionally strong. This afternoon you will have an opportunity to explore the colorful markets where local people sell varieties of fresh produce like avocados, peppers, spices, and gourds. During lunch, you'll experience your first taste of the local dishes and superb wines from nearby Cafayate. This evening, savor gourmet Andean Haut-cuisine at a local restaurant. We suggest delicacies like tamales, humitas, meat empanadas and casseroles of grilled goat meat.
Day 3 - Las Conchas Gorge
On day-3 you will enter the magnificent Las Conchas Gorge, once the bed of the ocean and now a treat for the eyes with its exceptional shapes carved in deep red sandstones. Enter the gorge through Talapampa and visit the Guitierrez Castex family goat farm. During your time at the farm, you'll have an opportunity to learn about local cheeses, be sure to taste the variety of flavors, including a rare dulce de leche, that combines nicely with a glass of local wine. Tonight, rest in the hotel located in the heart of Las Conchas Gorge. Spend time wandering the splendid surrounding grounds before heading to bed.
Day 4 - Vineyard and Cafayate
After a fabulous breakfast, you will start for a tour with an oenologist through nearby vineyards and learn about local wine production, special flavors and regional grapes that make this country's wine so unique. In the wine cellar, you'll have an opportunity to taste malbec-cabernet, appreciate its delicious and fruit-rich flavor. As you make your way to Cafayate Valley, spend some time wandering in the unbelievable rock formations of the gorge. You will be awe-struck by the diversity of colors that paint the rocky landscape. In the late afternoon, you'll be welcomed by the Cristofani family who will introduce you to their clay studio and elegant art form. You will also visit Barraco, a local silversmith popular in the area for his excellent wood and silver creations. Enjoy a striking sunset while taking an evening walk before you head back to your hotel.
Day 5 - Village Path to Cachi
Descend to the renowned Calchaquies Valley this morning, where a stunning natural landscape blends with unique architecture and cultural attractions to make this a captivating off-the-beaten-path region. You'll take a tour through the exciting Quebrada de la Flecha (Flecha Gorge), where a group of sandstone spikes frequently appear like moving figures due to the light. To keep you going strong, your guide will arrange a picnic lunch of typical Argentine foods. This area showcases historical mark of aboriginal settlements, adobe huts stand on sand dunes in this area. The city of Molinos is a magnificent spot to search out a unique gift, you'll see many local craftsmen selling handmade ponchos and blankets that they make using ancestral techniques. This evening you will reach in Cachi. With time, walk in the cobblestone streets, visit an ancient chapel made from cactus wood, or visit one of the best archaeological museums in Argentina.
Day 6 - Cultures and Landscapes
Today you start your day with an exciting drive through the National Park Los Cordones and the Encantado Valley on your way to Salta. Enjoy a comfortable lunch in the city before you leave for the Humahuaca Gorge. The region is listed in World Heritage site. The Spanish, from Peru, was the first to settle in this area, and as such, the region owns colonial churches with simple bell towers and decorative doors. But even more magnificent is the landscape itself, the canyon's colorful rocks adorn the horizon. You will make your way through various small villages until reaching Purmamarca, today's final destination. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and celebrate the day's adventure.
Day 7 - Afternoon in an Andean Kitchen
Start your morning with a visit to Tilcara and greet the Chef, Mercedes Costa, at El Patio restaurant. Listen to and follow Costa as she shares her secrets and experience of typical Andean food and its relation to the local culture. The cooking class includes traditional products from the region. Learn the process to tasty Tamales de Charqui, made with dry Andean maize and traditional methods. Enjoy a lunch that includes your homemade tamales and many other regional dishes, such as Mankakanca, Hajchalocro, and Chairo de Tuna. Come back to Purmamarca in the evening, return in time so that you can visit a local artisan market.
Day 8 - Enjoy Salta
Today you'll have the opportunity to reacquaint with beautiful Salta. Find amazing old cathedrals, churches, and museums to wander into today. There are shops full of local artisans' crafts, a rich food market and ancient city squares to explore. You can get a magnificent view of the city by taking the cable car to the top of Cerro San Bernardo. The city is yours to explore and enjoy!
Day 9 - Return Home
Today is the last day of your Latin American journey in Argentina. We will transfer you to the airport. Catch your flight to Buenos Aires and then connecting flights for home or continue your Latin American journey by visiting another destination in Argentina, such as Iguazu Falls. With more time in Salta, spend an additional night and take the Train to the Clouds excursion to witness stunning landscapes and scenery as you travel on one of the world's most marvelous railways.
