Chobe River is one of the large rivers in Botswana, flowing in the north of the country. It is one of the highlights in Kasane, close to the border with Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. During a river cruise on Chobe River, you will have to opportunity to practice your photography skills, especially if you’re taking the trip at sunset. The cruise takes around 2 hours, it gives you the chance to see some wildlife and relax while floating.
Although it’s officially on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Waterfalls is so close to the border with Botswana that it can almost be considered to also be part of Botswana. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Waterfalls impresses with its rainbows and a large flow of water. It is known among the locals as “the smoke that thunders” because of its similarity with smoke. This tour will give you 8 days of safari, mokoro (local boats with a flat bottom) trips, river cruises and getting soaked at Victoria Waterfall.
In some parts of the world, kids grow up riding bikes, in other parts of the world (like Botswana), kids grow up riding mokoros. Traditionally, mokoros are made of a tree known under the nickname of “sausage tree” because it produces fruits that look like sausages. These trees require about 100 years to grow, so nowadays, people prefer to build mokoros out of glass fiber. Mokoros are thin long boats with a flat bottom that are driven by polers. Discovering the wonders of Okavango Delta from a mokoro is a very calming experience. You feel close to nature. Although there are many companies that offer mokoro trips in Okavango Delta, not all of them do it for the local community. Old Bridge Backpackers are making sure that the local community benefits from the trips they organize. Moreover, they offer the best price available. You can choose a one day trip and a 4-day camping trip, either fully catered for or self-catered.
If you get to Kasane and you’re wondering what you could do, Chobe Safari Lodge has a few good ideas for you. They offer a wide range of activities for half days or full days. They can also make a customized offer for you, based on your interests and schedule. From game drives to fishing trips to cultural village trips, you can find all the information.
Kalahari Tours is one of the oldest tours companies in the area. With its 15 years of experience, they provide tourists with camping trips in Chobe National Park or just day trips if your time doesn’t allow for overnight. They are also able to arrange transfers, should you require one. if you’re an individual traveler, it might be one of the best offers at a fair price. Their experienced guides are professionals who know the area very well.
Moremi National Park is based close to Maun, Botswana. The wildlife in this area is amazing and even just a one day trip is enough for spotting countless elephants, giraffes, zebras, possibly lions and leopards. It’s easy to reach from Maun. There are many companies offering tours in Moremi National Park, some of which overnights in the camps inside the national park. Elephant Trail Moremi is a one day trip in order for you to get a taste of the wildlife in Botswana.
If you’re looking for a longer tour in Botswana, this 17-day tour might be the perfect choice for you. You will get to see the highlights of Botswana and, as a bonus, one of the seven natural wonders of the world (Victoria Waterfall in Livingstone, Zambia). At the end of the tour, you will have not only seen all the wildlife that Botswana has to offer, but you will have also learned a lot about the country’s culture. The famous thousand years old rock paintings are also a part of the tour.
A day activity having as a starting point Maun, Botswana, getting a tour to Sexaxa Village will offer you the opportunity to understand better the Bayei tribe. This is based on a cultural compound, helping the Bayei tribe to get an income from touristic activities while preserving their traditions and heritage. It’s an interesting experience, especially if you’re for the first time in this part of the world.
This is definitely the highlight of the area and a must-do for every traveler. Unlike most of the touristic options available in Botswana and particularly in Maun, camping in the Okavango Delta is one of the more affordable trips, even if you’re traveling on a budget, as long as you choose the self-catering option and provide your own food. For an additional fee, you can also choose the all-inclusive version, in which case you won’t need to worry about any of the logistics of the trip. A mokoro is a small boat with a flat bottom. It used to be made of ebony (sausage tree), but given that it takes the tree one hundred years to grow, while the life span of a mokoro is about five years, these days locals the boats out of fiberglass. To move the mokoro, one has to stand and push with a pole. Since the water in the Okavango Delta is low, this is the best way to move around. Of course, you won’t be able to get to the heart of the Okavango Delta on a mokoro (otherwise, you might get eaten by hippos), but you don’t have to in order to see elephants, hippos, giraffes, wild beasts and other animals in their natural environment. The quiet and calmness of the islands are perfect for relaxing. You can book your mokoro trip at The “Old Bridge” Backpackers (see number two on my list) or you can head all the way to Boro village and organize it yourself with the locals.
One of the things that makes Maun special is the Thamalakene river. It provides great walking opportunities, wonderful spots for watching the sunset and sometimes even places to spot hippos or crocodiles - so make sure not to walk too close to the river and stay away from the shore when it is dark! Thanks to the trees on the shore, you can also find places to hide from the burning sun on a hot day.
This is the last day of your Botswana tour, pack your bags and get ready to leave for your hometown. Wake up according to your flight schedule and after having your meal, leave for the airport. Hope you enjoy your trip to Botswana!
