Day 1: Arrival in Colombo
Today you begin your Sri Lanka tour by boarding your international flight to Colombo. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your private guide who will stay with you for the entire duration of your trip.
Day 2: Venturing to Kandy
Your Sri Lankan vacation starts with a journey to Kandy, crossing many rural villages, your guide will be able to suggest places to stop in between for refreshments. Depending on your flight timing, you will have the remainder of the day at your own leisure.
Day 3: Kandy Exploration
Visit the gorgeous botanical gardens on the outskirts of Kandy. Take a stroll through the gardens, visit the orchid house and relish the riverside views. Later, make a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, which is one of the most sacred sites for the Buddhist community. In the evening, make your way to a small theatre to enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance performance which lasts for an hour, showcasing some of Sri Lanka's rich dance culture. It ends with a dramatic fire walking show.
Day 4: Traversing to Sigiriya
Today, you’ll be transferred north to Sigiriya, passing via the striking caves in Dambulla. The site that dates back to the 1st century BC, consists of 5 temples which are carved into the rock within a hill emerging over Dambulla. Take a walk up the steps to the top of the hill and enjoy the views of the surrounding plains before you explore these wonderful temples. Enjoy an overnight stay in Sigiriya, situated in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle.
Day 5: Exploring Sigiriya
Explore the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress this morning as well as the nearby ancient city of Polonnaruwa with your guide. Polonnaruwa is still a devoted holy city so you can connect with brightly robed Buddhist monks and pilgrims who are dressed in white bringing lovely floral offerings.
Day 6: Heading to Passikudah
The second capital city of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa ruins have a blend of both Buddhist and Hindu influences. These are an amazing place to learn more about the history of Sri Lanka. After exploring Polonnaruwa, today you will be driven on for your further journey by the coast.
Day 7: A Free Day in Passikudah
Today is your free day to enjoy the coast. You can either simply relax on the beach or enjoy some of the spa facilities. Your hotel also offers excursions to a local fishing village in case you would like to observe some local culture.
Day 8: Traveling to Pallepola
After a delicious breakfast, you will be driven to your next hotel, a farm stay which is more lavish than it sounds. The journey will take approximately three hours. Jim's Farm is a great base for exploring within the cultural triangle. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to stop for photo sessions or for a refreshment break.
Day 9: A Day of Adventures in Pallepola
Today morning, you will visit Sigiriya Rock with your private guide, who will be able to narrate you with the history of the rock as you praise the views on the top. Make sure to wear sensible shoes and take enough water with you. Although not the easiest of climbs, the splendid views reward your hard work. Later, you will visit the Dambulla Caves, that date back to the 1st Century. All of the caves consist of varying sizes of Buddha statues and a number of have striking ceiling frescos.
Day 10: A Tour of Pallepola
Today get ready to visit nearby Aluvihara and Matale. In Aluvihara, explore the rock temple, which is considered to date back to the 1st Century BC. If you are someone who like temples, the Sri Muthumariamman Temple in Matale is an ideal place for you and is also worth seeing. Else, Matale is famous for its spice markets and is fun to explore.
Day 11: More Time in Pallepola
Your private guide will collect you today after breakfast and take you to Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka. The drive will take around 90 minutes. The medieval city ruins have a mix of both Buddhist as well as Hindu influence and are an amazing place to learn more about the country’s history.
Day 12: Heading to Nuwara Eliya
Today you will board a train south to the tea country, where you have spectacular views out over the tea plantations and pickers who are working the harvest. Depending on your train timing, you may have the entire afternoon at leisure to relish some relaxation in this wonderful region.
Day 13: Walking Tour of Nuwara Eliya
This morning, your guide will take you to see a local tea factory. Here you will get to witness the process from start to finish. Enjoy observing the leaves being plucked by hand in the tea fields and sample the variety teas if you wish. The remaining of the day is at your own leisure. In case you enjoy walking, this region is wonderful to get out and explore on foot.
Day 14: One Day Tour of Galle
Today, you’ll leave the tea country and make your way south along the coastline to Galle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Small back streets in the Dutch Fort here provide a very pleasant experience. This is going to be a long drive which usually takes most of the day, but your guide can suggest places in between for you to stop and explore - there are a number of magnificent waterfalls. The evening is going to be at your own leisure. Your hotel is situated within the fort walls and so you might like to explore the restaurants and boutiques in the fort later in the evening.
Day 15: Returning Back to Colombo
This morning, you leave Galle and will be driven north along the coastline to your accommodation back in Colombo. The drive can differ dramatically in time depending on when you choose to depart, so it is important to discuss timings with your specialist. Remaining of the day at your own leisure.
Day 16: Departure Back Home
After breakfast, you will meet your private guide at the hotel lobby and transferred to the airport for your onward flight back home.
