DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1. Arrival in Quito

Most of the Ecuador tours begin in Quito, the country’s capital. Quito is unique for plenty of reasons, but most visitors will appreciate that it possesses such an amazingly preserved historic center. The Old Town is filled with architecture that dates back from the 16th to the 19th century. Just a few of the world-class museums include the extensive art collection at the Museo del Banco Central and the Museo de la Ciudad, where scenes from the history of Ecuador are reenacted live on an hourly basis. Quito is the second highest capital city in the globe, and to genuinely appreciate that fact you would like to head outdoors with a stroll through the Parque La Carolina or can also opt for a ride on the Teleferico cable car.

Day 2. A Day Tour of Otavalo

While you stay in Quito, set aside a complete day to explore Otavalo, a city just 80 km north of Quito. The city is home to an indigenous population known as the Otavalos, a group observable thanks to the long tresses of both men and women. You will spot the Otavalos in their traditional dress, which is a colorful, embroidered waistband over a skirt for women and a dark poncho for men. Visit weekly Mercado Artesanal, one of the most popular outdoor markets in the Andes, shop for the handicrafts here and then learn more about the local culture by heading to the Museo del Pueblo Kichwa or one of the local villages, where guided tours are provided. Relish the stunning scenery with a short detour to the Peguche Waterfall situated just two miles outside of the city.

Day 3. Visiting Tena

Tena is a comparatively small jungle town, also known as the cinnamon capital of Ecuador, but more importantly, it serves as the gateway to the Ecuadorian Amazon. In case you feel like exploring the natural side of the country on your Ecuador tour, then spending time in Tena is perfect. You can go caving through the underground labyrinth known as Cuevas de Jumandy, try out a rafting expedition, go on a canoe tour through the Amazon or hire a guide to trek to the summit of the Sumaco Volcano.

Day 4. Heading to Baños

Under the shadow of the marvelous Tungurahua Volcano situated in the Ecuadorian Andes highlands is the city of Baños. Named for the hydrothermal springs in the city, Baños is a scenic getaway spot that is situated with the potential for adventure. It might feel a little touristy, but the experience can’t be beaten if you are in search of some adrenaline. Enjoy rappelling down the side of a waterfall, riding a cable car directly over the incredible Manto de la Novia Waterfalls, cycling along the stimulating downhill Pailón del Diablo path or rafting in the Pastaza River. After an entire day of thrills, relax and unwind by absorbing in one of the thermal baths, some of which offer amazing waterfall views while you recline in the warm water.

Day 5. Enjoy a Thrilling Experience in Cuenca

Cuenca is situated in Southern Ecuador and is famous for its mild climate that persists year-round. Cuenca possess an array of wonderful colonial buildings and a few ruins dating to the ancient Inca Empire, making it a ‘must-see’ spot for historical buffs. In Cuenca, you can explore the impressive collection at the Museo del Banco Central and Pumapungo, tour the historic monuments, or spot animals in the Amaru Zoo. Spend some time in the Parque Calderon, which is the city’s main plaza, and admire the gorgeous 19th-century cathedral called El Sagrario. Enjoy an unforgettable evening by heading to the Barranco, which is a riverwalk destination having paved trails, cafes, bars and shops available for pedestrians.

Day 6. Experience Life at Guayaquil

Though Quito is the capital city of Ecuador, Guayaquil is its largest city. Guayaquil is a port city famous for delicious seafood and a diverse culture. Explore the Parque Histórico, which is a lush green park serving as the home to several historic buildings, the Mercado Artesanal for souvenir shopping, the gardens and butterfly farm at the Jardín Botánico, and the famous Salinas beach, which offers almost everything from seafood feasts to seasonal whale watching right on the sand.
