Day 1: Arrival in Kunming
Today you begin your China journey by boarding your international flight to Kunming.
Upon arrival, you are met at the airport by your private guide and driven to your city hotel. You have the entire evening free to explore the city if you wish, or just simply relax in your hotel room after the long journey. You may like to take a walk to Green Park Lake, surrounded by teahouses and crisscrossed by traditional bridges.
Day 2: Kunming Exploration
This morning, visit the Stone Forest accompanied by your private guide. The forest has a splendid array of natural stone peaks, stalactites, stalagmites, subterranean rivers, and underground caves. After your excursion, return back to Kunming and you will have the entire afternoon at leisure to explore the city on your own. You can also visit Green Lake Park where you can relish views of the lake and observe locals doing their exercises, or can take a walk in Kunming’s small old quarter.
Day 3: Venturing to Dali
Today, you’ll be transferred to Kunming railway station accompanied by your guide and catch the high-speed train to Dali. The journey will take approximately two hours. On reaching, you will be met by your private guide and will begin your tour of Dali. Dali is famous for its vibrant people, rich agriculture, its embroidery, popular marble and outstanding breed of horses. You will also explore Dali's walled town and then visit the historic Three Pagodas area, which is one of the town's most popular sights.
Day 4: A Walking Tour of Dali
In the morning, get ready to be driven out to the lovely Cangshan Mountains, where you can enjoy a guided walking tour to soak in some of the lovely sweeping views of Dali and Erhai Lake below. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the hillside in the afternoon before you continue with your walk. On your way back to your hotel, you can stop at the produce market in Xiaguan and spend some time discovering local fruits and vegetables and also minorities handicrafts.
Day 5: One Day Tour of Shaxi
Today you depart Dali and head for Shaxi. You will have a brief stop at Xizhou, which has always been favored by the rich tea merchants who constructed amazing homes in this tiny lakeside town. Afterward, your private guide will take you to the village of Shaxi, a 2-hour journey through the deep countryside, intertwisting through villages and rice paddies. After you check-in to your hotel, you will have enough time to explore this quaint rural village. Meander around its market square and along the river, praising its 14th-century Ming Dynasty buildings.
Day 6: Heading to Lijiang
This morning, you’ll explore Shaxi before leaving for Lijiang. There is a stop in between to visit the grottoes and temple complex of Shibaoshan before your guide takes you further north to Lijiang, a pretty town in the shadow of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The drive with the excursion will take approximately 4 hours, and you will probably reach Lijiang in the late afternoon to check in to your hotel.
Day 7: Exploring Lijiang
Today, you will traverse out of Lijiang to visit Zhiyun Monastery, which is one of five most significant lamaseries in the region having a 300-year history, where you may be able to observe the monks praying and studying. Continue your journey to Shuhe village to connect with a Naxi Shaman and his family. The Shaman will show you around the pretty village and give you an insight into his faith and ceremonial practices before you enjoy lunch with his family. In the afternoon, return back to Lijiang and take a tour of Lijiang’s medieval streets filled with slate-tiled houses and latticed with mountain streams and waterways. Afterward, take a brief visit to Black Dragon Pond Park for some of the incredible views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Day 8: One Day Tour of Tacheng
This morning, you embark on a private transfer to Tacheng, which is the gateway to the Snub-Nosed Monkey National Park. You will first visit the splendid Tiger Leaping Gorge, which is one of the world's deepest gorge and admire the gorge from a viewing platform. You can also take a steep walk down steps If you wish to the Jinsha River at the bottom. Later, continue to Tacheng, a journey of about four hours through mountains and valleys. Upon arrival, check in to your lodge accommodation.
Day 9: Traveling to Zhongdian
Situated about 30 minutes from Tacheng, the Xianggujing Golden Monkey National Park works to guard the endangered Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey species and educate tourists about the monkeys. You will spend the entire day at the national park with your private guide and learn about these monkeys, observe them eat and play in the hazy forest of this well-managed, sustainable park. Later in the afternoon, you will depart from Tacheng for Zhongdian with your private guide on a three-hour journey. Famous as ‘Shangri-La’ and sometimes known as ‘Gyalthang’ in Tibetan, it is situated at 3,200 meters above sea level. You will experience a distinctive blend of Tibetan and Han cultures here. On reaching, check in to your hotel.
Day 10: Zhongdian Exploration
Today you’ll visit Songzanlin Monastery which is the largest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in China and discover Shangri-La’s Tibetan culture. It has amazing views over a valley and gives you an insight into the day-to-day life of its monks by exploring some of the interesting surrounding Tibetan villages. Afterward, soak in the gorgeous scenery of Napa Lake, where there may be chances to spot some wildlife and birds.
Day 11: One Day Tour of Yuanyang
This morning, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your one hour flight to Kunming. Upon arrival, you will be met by a private guide and transferred to Yuanyang, located five hours south of Kunming. Situated in Honghe Prefecture, along the Red River, Yuanyang is famous for its splendid rice terraces, part of which now forms the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site in China. After check-in, enjoy an overnight stay in town.
Day 12: Traversing to Jianshui
Today you’ll spend most of your time exploring Yuanyang accompanied by your guide. You can begin with a visit to a bustling morning market for an opportunity to witness various ethnic minorities such as the Hani, Miao, Yi, Dai, and Zhuang in their vibrant costumes gathered to sell their products or to buy supplies. Later, make your way to explore the region's rice terraces, formed by the Hani people over centuries that look like stairs leading to the sky. Afterward, you will be driven to the town of Jianshui, a historic center in Yunnan province and a significant transportation crossroad today. The journey will take approximately two and a quarter hours.
Day 13: Departure Back Home
Today you will be transferred to Kunming Changshui International Airport in time for your return flight back home.
