Day 2: Santiago, Valparaiso
Today early in the morning we will head towards the west coast. On your way, stop for a wine tasting in the Casablanca Valley, situated about 45 minutes outside of Santiago. Nestled on a coastal plain between the capital and Valparaiso, the valley is Chile’s fastest growing wine region; its productive soil and perfect climate make it a wine producer’s paradise. This visit of approximately 1 hour is focused more on learning the sustainability and organic goals of the vineyard and the types of biodiversity rather than tasting wine. Nice to know however that this area is famous for crisp Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also for beautiful reds like Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah. Continue for approximately 1.5 hours through the lush green vineyards to the coast and the picturesque city of Valparaiso, famous for its brilliantly hued houses spread across a series of hills overlooking the ocean. As a creative hub, the city has no lack of options for a drink, so perhaps find yourself a place to sip some ancho Reyes to the evening alongside locals.
Day 3: Valparaiso
Today we will head out for a walking tour of Valparaiso. It's a vivid, chaotically laid out city that's full of wonders, and much romanticized by poets such as Pablo Neruda. The places we will visit include Aníbal Pinto, Paseo Gervasoni, Reloj Turri, Paseo Yugoslavo, Calle Serrano and many more boulevards and places of interest. Later on, the walking tour will take us to the Lukas Museum, which houses the collection of creative works by the cartoonist and illustrator Renzo Pecchenino (Lukas). The walking tour ends in Muelle Prat (Prat Dock), a pleasant spot to view sailors arrive in their Lanchas or small ships and to soak up the usual buzz and bustle of harbourside life.
Day 4: San Pedro de Atacama
Today we will return to Santiago and take our flight to Calama. On arrival, your guide will meet you and drive you for approximately 1.5 hours to reach San Pedro. Once you settle down at your hotel, your tour leader will take you on an introduction walk around the small city. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax or explore the area on your own.
Day 5: San Pedro de Atacama
This morning we will start early at around 430am. Head out on a guided tour to the El Tatio geyser placed 4300 meters above sea level in the Atacama desert with an English speaking local guide. On this trip witness, the third-largest geyser field and the highest-elevation geyser fields in the world. View in wonder as more than 100 geysers huff and puff around you, bursting streams of water and gas into the chilly air. The El Tatio Geyser Field sits just over 14,000 feet (4,267 m) above sea level in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile, and reaching here is half the fun. Travel up winding mountain ways, surrounded by the snow-covered peaks of both active and sleeping volcanoes. Magma trapped beneath the surface of the earth boils the water underground, resulting in a bursting release of pressure. The water run-off from the geysers creates big streams and drains away into blue-green geothermal ponds, while small streams flow down towards lower altitudes. As you travel through the fields, steam springing all around you, keep an eye out for the geyser field's stunning local wildlife, which proves that nature's beauty can flourish even in harsh conditions. This activity will end around 1 pm and the rest of the day is free. To enjoy the evening there are plenty of optional activities available including a visit to the hot springs, several hikes and a visit to one of the Lagunas, please talk to your tour leader for some options.
Day 6: San Pedro de Atacama
The first half of today is free to choose your preferred activities. In the late afternoon, head out on a guided excursion to the Moon Valley in the Atacama desert with an English speaking local guide. Situated around 10 km away from San Pedro de Atacama, this has been declared a natural sanctuary as part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve (within the Salt Mountain range). On this trip, you view a geological spectacle of many colors and formations, similar to the moon's surface. We will also visit the Tres Marias statues, the salt cave and trek up to the Gran Duna (Great Dune) where you can admire a magnificent panorama as the sun sets and the sky turns into an artist’s vision.
Day 7: Santiago
Today we will transfer you back to Calama airport for your flight back to Santiago. On arrival, enjoy a free afternoon to further explore Santiago and perhaps head out for a final group dinner. You have the opportunity to visit one of Santiago’s most renowned museums, La Chascona, is available. The former home of beloved poet and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda, the playful residence provides a snapshot into the life and mind of Neruda and is loaded with art, eccentric collections, and even his Nobel Prize. The free afternoon is free to explore further the city on your own.
