This in-depth journey of Brazil not only passes through the coastal cities of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, but it includes the mysterious Amazon region, the wildlife nirvana of the Pantanal and the roaring waters of the Iguazu Falls. Searching for animals including capybara and caiman is the ideal way to explore the Pantanal wetlands, while three nights in the remote Amazonia region give another aspect on this vast and diverse country.
Day 1: Welcome to Salvador
Today you will join your tour in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia and one of Brazil's most historically rich cities. It's origin dated back to 1501 when the navigator Amerigo Vespucci first sailed into its bay. Initially considered to be the nation's capital due to the natural protection by the cliffs rising from the sea, its bay was one of the distinct anchorages on the eastern shores of the New World. Once an affluent city from trade and later from the discovery of diamonds inland, this era of prosperity has left a legacy of colonial architecture, mainly centered in the Upper City atop the cliffs, now listed as a historic monument by UNESCO.
Day 2: Guided Tour of Salvador
This morning we have a guided introductory tour of the city. The Pelourinho area is regarded to hold the most important collection of 17th-18th-century architecture in the whole of the Americas. The area is a jumble of centuries-old churches, narrow cobbled streets and spacious plazas bordered by once classic but now gently decaying mansions. The natural setting is brilliant overlooking the Todos os Santos Bay. What instantly strikes the traveler is that despite its Portuguese architecture, the spirit, cuisine, culture, and people are predominantly African. The area's riches were basically based on sugar cane and tobacco, with the majority of the workforce coming from the west coast of Africa, for over 300 years Salvador was the center of rising slave trade. The modern-day population is mostly of African origin, this can be heard in the rhythms of the music and in the dance, the cuisine, and Candomble, a blend of African and Christian deities and rites. This afternoon is free for personal exploration of the area or to relax on the beach.
Day 3: Fly to Manaus, the Amazon Gateway
Today we will transfer you to the airport in Salvador to fly to Manaus, the great city, placed in the heart of the Amazon basin on the banks of the Negro river. The bustle of an urban community seems almost other-worldly in the midst of enormous tracts of jungle extending in all directions. Once wealthy and fashionable, the capital Amazonas is now fast expanding as a free trade zone.
Day 4: Travel by Bus and Boat to Amazon Lodge
The morning is free to explore Manaus where you may like to visit the Opera House. In the early afternoon, we will travel to the port to board our boat and cross the Amazon, viewing the 'Meeting of the Waters' phenomenon en route. We continue traveling by bus and speedboat through the channels and creeks through the rainforest to reach our lodge.
Day 5: Night Boat Trip in the Amazon, Jungle Walk
There is a variety of activities to enjoy the most of our time in the heart of the rainforest. Fish for Piranha, visit the local Caboclo community or go for a trek into the jungle, accompanied by a local guide. At night get ready and go for spotting caiman by torchlight, their beady eyes reflecting the light, as red pinpricks floating in the darkness.
Day 6: Fly to Cuiaba from Manaus
We will return to Manaus by launch where we will board our plane to Cuiaba, from where we will start our journey into the Pantanal the next day.
Day 7: Drive to the Pantanal Wildlife Reserve
Today we will drive from Cuiaba to the Pantanal Wildlife Reserve along the Transpantaneira road, here we have our first encounters with wildlife at the waterholes. Our lodge is placed by a river and has a pool to relax offering a wonderful combination of relaxation and an opportunity to see the most readily accessible and prolific wildlife in Latin America. Lie in your hammock and enjoy the evening birdsong.
Day 8: Jeep Safari and Boat Ride in Pantanal
Today we continue exploring Pantanal Wildlife Reserve on foot and by boat, with lots of opportunities to spot wildlife. A jeep safari offers incredible wildlife viewing in all Latin America journey. You will leave your lodge at around 5.30am, and return at approximately 7 pm, spending around 7-8 hours on the boat to spot the beautiful creatures.
Day 10: Fly to Iguazu Falls
This morning we will return to Cuiaba by road to catch an afternoon flight to Iguazu. We will admire the vastness of the Amazonian plains below as the flight takes up the majority of the day, and you will have the joy of seeing the Falls over the next day. With its jungle setting, the Iguazu Falls are perhaps the world's most stunning waterfalls and are a major highlight of this Latin America journey.
Day 11: Explore the Brazilian Side of the Falls
Today we will explore falls on the Brazilian side. Placed in a national park, the Iguacu River plunges over high cliffs into a spectacularly curved amphitheater several miles wide creating a breathtaking sight. The noise is great and huge clouds of mist are shaken up by the cascade. The surrounding spray-soaked forest is alive with brilliantly plumaged toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, and colorful butterflies.
Day 12: Fly to Rio de Janeiro
Today we will leave the Iguazu area, and fly to Rio de Janeiro. The dramatic setting of Rio is hard to beat. With 120 miles of spectacular beaches and a mountain backdrop it really is a tropical paradise. This afternoon is free to relax, so visit the Botanical Gardens enduring in the city for more than 200 years, or relish a caipirinha overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This evening you could finish off your Brazilian experience by visiting samba show or experience the sounds and rhythms of the city in the nightlife district of Lapa.
Day 13: Visit Corcovado, Afternoon Rio City Tour
In the morning your tour leader will arrange a visit to the towering summit of Corcovado topped by the enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer and the Sambadrome where the Rio carnival takes place or you can just relax on the beaches before your afternoon city tour. After lunch your local guide will take you along the Guanabara Bay coastline, adorned with the vast lawns and native trees of Parque do Flamengo, to the city centre to view the tremendous stain glass windows of the Metropolitan Cathedral before boarding a cable car up to the immense Sugar Loaf Mountain from where the late afternoon views of Rio are breathtaking.
Day 14: Departure
Your Latin America journey ends in Rio this morning after breakfast and we will transfer you to the airport for your home flight.
