Day 3 - Altun Ha & Belize Zoo Adventure

The Belize Zoo is the ideal way to experience Belize’s untamed jungles and savannahs. The Tropical Education Center was begun in 1983 to provide a home for wild animals featured in several documentaries. From the beginning, it was clear that Belizeans were not familiar with the different species of wildlife that shared their nation and great efforts were made to transform the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center.
Today, the Belize Zoo comprises approximately 29 acres of tropical savannah and features over 125 animals native to Belize. Many of these animals were hurt when rescued and have been aided back to health. Enjoy the excellent range of mammals, birds, and reptiles in their natural environment, including jaguars, howler monkeys, toucans, egrets, crocodiles, and tree frogs. You will spend approximately 4 hours enjoying the zoo and educational center before returning to Belize City.
Wonderful landmarks and old colonial buildings combined with the modern give the “Old Belize Capital” that Caribbean attraction. Leaving the city, you travel past many quaint villages along the “Old Northern Highway” towards your Mayan Ruins adventure. Admire the marvelous geological formations including sparkling stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones.
Three plazas and thirteen structures identify the epicenter of this very significant ceremonial site of the ancient Mayan civilization. Altun Ha also served as a trade center, situated only seven miles from the sea and surrounded by primary broadleaf rainforest. This site attracted world attention when Professor David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum found the 9½ pound jade head of the Sun God Kinich Ahau in the tomb of a Royal Priest, placed within the main temple of the masonry altars. Prepared stone steps allow travelers to rise atop one of the main temples on the site to capture the stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Day 4 - Actun Tunichil Muknal

A short swim through the crystal blue water will take you into the marvelous realm of Actun Tunichil Muknal. Then working your way through a breakdown drives you to the main water passage, where you get to enjoy exciting geological formations such as sparkling stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones.
This hidden chamber guarantees to unveil ancient secrets and geological processes that have helped to form the Mayan underworld known as Xibalba. Years ago, our ancestors believed that only priests could have experimented and interacted with the gods through rituals and ceremonies. The Mayas thought their gods had double faces, they could be both good and bad. They, therefore, made offerings to the gods comprising of food, blood, or human sacrifices for rain, fertility, hunting, and agriculture.
Xibalba was the dreadful world beneath the face of the earth, the parallel unseen another world into which kings and shamans could enter in an overjoyed trance and satisfy their gods for their benefits.
