One of the most significant and best-loved medieval sights of Egypt, Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum. The modern city of Luxor is constructed on and around the site of the medieval city of Thebes, which historians approximate to have been inhabited since 3,200 BC. It is also home to the Karnak temple complex, which acted as the main place of worship for the Thebans. The three sites together have been drawing visitors since the Greco-Roman times, all of them attracted by the area's splendid collection of medieval temples and monuments.
