DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Exploring Ljubljana

Begin your Slovenia journey in vibrant Ljubljana and get a taste of Slovenia’s life firsthand in the capital. Stay here overnight for one day, or better yet stay for three days to explore the capital city in its entirety.

Wander around the quaint streets of the Old Town and make your way to the iconic Triple Bridge, witness the grandiose Cathedral or check out Town Hall.

For the most amazing views of the Old Town, visit Ljubljana Fortress and enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the capital from the tower.

In case of a rainy day, you can choose between the various museums the city has to offer, such as the Museum of Illusions, the Natural History Museum, or the science-themed House of Experiments.

In case you are in no mood for sightseeing, just sit and sip a cup of coffee in one of the numerous cafes situated by the banks of the Ljubljanica River.

Day 2: Heading to Maribor

Extend your city sightseeing days by visiting Maribor, the second largest city of Slovenia situated 90-minute drive away from Ljubljana.

Maribor possesses a number of historical sites, such as the Gothic-style Cathedral, Maribor Castle, the remains of the 13th-century old city walls, and Town Hall built in classical Renaissance style. But the city is most known for its fine wine, so don’t miss enjoying some local treats while you are here. Do make sure to visit the 400-year-old grape vine growing just outside the Old Vine House on the riverbank.

Day 3: A One Day Tour of Caves, Castles and Karst Formations

Had enough of cities? Then, plan a visit to the natural attractions Slovenia is so popular for, namely its caves.

Today, you’ll be driven down to Skocjan Cave to feel like a small, insignificant little human next to the powerful forces of nature. Throughout your 1.5 hour-long guided walking tour, learn to look at cave systems in an entirely new light and you’ll perhaps never underestimate a river ever again in your entire lifetime.

For the second exploration, make your way to Postojna Cave, one of the most visited caves in the globe. You’ll be transferred by a small train to the heart of the cave where you can praise the most splendid stalagmites and stalagtites during a 45-minute walking tour. Later, you’ll once again enjoy a 20-minute train ride from the center of the cave towards its exit.

You’ll conclude a cave-themed day by visiting Predjama Castle. The Renaissance building was actually constructed inside a cave’s mouth and is situated merely 15 minutes away from Postojna, so make sure to include it in your itinerary.

Day 4: Adventure in Vintgar Gorge

It’s time to bid goodbye to Central Slovenia and head over to Upper Carniola, where you can visit the well-known Lake Bled and much more. If you do not wish to go in crowded places, it is suggested that you pick an accommodation site in quaint Bohinjska Bistrica instead of the city of Bled.

After settling in and feeling a bit of adventure inside you, hiking through the Vintgar Gorge is highly recommended for today. At an entrance fee of just 4 euros, you can trek on the education trail made up of wooden bridges and pathways for 2 hours. At the end of the trail, discover a majestic 13-meter tall Sum waterfall, the tallest river waterfall in all of Slovenia.

By now, you must be feeling pretty tired. Recover your forces in the afternoon and pamper yourself at the local spa in Bohinjska Bistrica.

Day 5: Wandering Around Lake Bohinj

Bohinj is a more underrated lake in comparison to Bled, but that’s the beauty of it.

Lake Bohinj is not so crowded and might even possess a more picturesque backdrop than Lake Bled since it is situated deeper into Triglav National Park.

Enjoy a nice picnic with your significant other by the lake or choose for a day of canoeing/kayaking if the weather is good.

In case you feel eager to explore more of this area, make your way west to witness Savica Waterfall, the main source of Lake Bohinj.

The waters of Savica have a 78-meter drop and can be easily reached through a short 25-minute hike on a well-marked trail. The entrance to the park will cost you 3 euros.

You can also enjoy a spectacular and unparalleled view of Lake Bohinj by moving up to the nearest ski center known as Vogel by cable car.

The ride will cost you 15 euros round-trip and in a couple of minutes you’ll not only get to witness the breathtaking lake from above, you’ll also be quite closer to a number of hiking trails offering splendid views of the National Park.

Day 6: Day Trip close to the Triple Border

Today, you’ll head North to witness a different angle of the mighty Triglav National Park.

Just before you reach the triple border, between the last two villages in Slovenia, you’ll discover one of the most picturesque hidden gems in the entire country, Zelenci Nature Park. The park is in actuality a wetland reserve boasting unique plants, wildlife, and the confluence of the Sava River.

This scenic piece of natural beauty is definitely worth a stop along your tour in Slovenia.

The quaint town of Kranjska Gora is not only a lovely alpine resort but also the gateway to Vrsic Pass, the highest mountain pass in all of Slovenia.

Day 7: Exploring Scenic Lake Bled from Every Angle

Lake Bled is one of the most-visited places in Slovenia, and so can get quite crowded at times.

If you wish to get a traditional view of the lake, move up to the castle and explore a little bit of its history while also enjoying the splendid view.

If you wish to avoid the crowd, then make your way to Ojstrica viewpoint. Though it requires more effort than reaching the castle, the hike is pretty easy, there are only a few people around and the view is even better, having the mountains and the castle serving as the backdrop of the lake.
