DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: 3-day safari from Arusha - explore the surrounding national parks

Arusha is the place to start your safari experience. This budget safari will organize everything for you over a three day period. You will get to see Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. This tour will give you a good overview of the nature existent around Arusha.

Day 2: Zanzibar North Coast and Turtle Sanctuary with Lunch

Are you looking for a sunny place, with a nice sandy beach and coconuts all around you? Zanzibar is the place for that. This tour will take you to the north coast of Zanzibar, in the village of Nungwi. It’s a rather cultural tour, as you’ll get to learn more about the conservation struggles of the turtle sanctuary. The northern tip of Zanzibar is known for its splendid sunsets, so you’ll only head back to Stone Town after sunset.

Day 3: Day trip to Tarangire National Park

If you’re looking for a place to escape to for one day while in Arusha, do consider going to Tarangire National Park. The impressive wildlife and the wonderful landscape make the trip worthwhile. Expect to see countless elephants as it’s the place with the highest concentration of elephants in the world. You will for sure come across a few lions as well. As it’s not the first choice of most tourists, you might have the place to yourself.

Day 4: Day Trip in Mikumi National Park

Not the most famous national park in Tanzania, Mikumi National Park is a good place to escape Dar Es Salaam. It is also the easiest one to reach if you’re based in Dar Es Salaam. It has a high number in animal life, making it easy to spot buffalos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, elephants and often lions year round. This is the tour to choose if your time is limited, yet you’re interested to see some wild animals while traveling in Tanzania.

Day 5: 8-Day Best of Kenya and Tanzania Safari from Nairobi

When planning a trip around Eastern Africa, it’s not an easy job to decide which countries to focus on, what to choose, where to go, which cities to visit, and which national parks to drive around. This 8-day tour makes the best decision for you for touring Kenya and Tanzania. It starts in Nairobi and takes you all the way to Tanzania.

Day 6: Ngorongoro National Park day tour

If you only have one day to spend in a national park, your best choice is going to Ngorongoro National Park. Here you are guaranteed to see a lot of wildlife and the setting is amazing, with the animals walking around in the large crater. Standing on the edge of the crater comes with a special feeling. This tour will take you from Arusha on a one day drive around Ngorongoro National Park. If you have more days at hand and your budget allows, do combine it with a trip to Serengeti National Park.

Day 7: Zanzibar spice tour

Zanzibar is known around Tanzania as the place where spices come. It’s here that you can smell spices you never knew existed. Many farms are specialized in growing a variety of spices for both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. This tour is specially designed to take you to the main spice farms on the island, giving you a taste of what spice diversity really means.

Day 8: Meet red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest

The red colobus monkey is an endangered species and Jozani Forest is one of the few places in the world where you can still find them. Although the area is not very large (the walk would most probably take you less than an hour), both the nature trail and the boardwalk provide good opportunities to spot the monkeys and several bird species. Walking through wild mangroves is also impressive.

Day 9: Tour of Stone Town in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is one of the most touristic locations in Tanzania. It is for sure a place with a special vibe and Stone Town is the main town on the island, with its old buildings and narrow streets, it’s the place to get lost and discover while saying “Mambo” (local greeting in Swahili) every other minute. If you don’t have a lot of time at hand, but you still what to see the main attractions in Stone Town, this guide will take you to the main points of interest. It also includes a tour of Prison Island.

Day 10: Get closer to nature in idyllic Matemwe

Take a Dalla-Dalla (mini-bus) from Stone Town to discover a small traditional village in the northeast of Zanzibar. The long beach with its fine sand makes it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the ocean while watching the fishermen do their work. Due to the coral gardens, Matemwe is a great spot for snorkeling and diving. The village life here moves at a slow pace, the quietness and remoteness giving the perfect opportunity to disconnect and get closer to nature.

Day 11: Paje, Nungwi & Kendwa

Paje is located in eastern Zanzibar, not very far from the Michamvi Peninsula. With its party atmosphere and noisiness, you can let the party animal in you get out and enjoy your time here. If you’re still energetic during the day, you can also try out kite surfing, as this is the most popular place for that. There are many Dalla-Dallas to these areas to bring you here from Stone Town. Up north, right at the tip of the island, you can find the busy Nungwi, and 3 km (1.86 mi) southwest of Nungwi there is Kendwa. In Kendwa, most of the activities are based around the beach such as snorkeling, diving, volleyball, and boat trips. You would still be pretty much surrounded by tourists, yet it doesn’t feel as crowded as Nungwi. Nungwi is a place of contrasts — although traditional fishing practices are still happening in this large village, luxurious hotels and crowds of tourists make it feel less authentic. It is, however, probably the place that offers some of the most luxurious hotels on the island, so in the end, it’s all about your preference.

Day 12: The long beach of Michamvi Peninsula

Situated in the east, Michamvi Peninsula is the place where you want your picture from Zanzibar taken. The view of the ocean combined with the white, Coral Sand gives an extraordinary effect and wonderful color combination. On the northwestern side of the peninsula, you can learn more about village life in Zanzibar by visiting Michamvi Village. You can get there easily by hiring a Dalla-Dalla (mini-bus) from either Stone Town or Makunduchi Village.

Day 13: Departure

Leave early in the morning to catch your flight and do not forget to take your breakfast in the middle of the journey.
