A 3-Day Weekend Getaway to Auckland
Located in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand is an intriguing island country. Here you can easily find the perfect blend of picturesque landscapes, diverse cultures, and friendly populace. You might want to stay here for awhile, but instead of giving you an overview of everything, let’s go deeper into just one of the most prominent cities in New Zealand - Auckland and plan a 3-day weekend getaway as part of your New Zealand vacation.
Auckland is the largest and most populous city in New Zealand. It is located on the North Island and is the only city in the world built on an active basaltic volcanic field. The city has a mix of cultures and is home to the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. Auckland lies on an Isthmus surrounded by two harbors, Waitemata to the north and Manukau to the south.
Day 1 of your trip will be spent here, in the heart of the city. You will want to make sure to check out the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, for a great view of the city. For a different view, climb Mount Eden, the tallest volcanic cone in the city. Visit the iconic Harbour Bridge, which connects the center of the city to the North Shore. Take a stroll down Queen Street for great shopping. Auckland is known as the “City of Sails” so no trip would be complete without heading out for a boat ride.
From Auckland, take a 30-minute ferry through Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island. Spend the day traversing the vineyards, olive groves, and beaches. Spend the day relaxing on the white sand at Oneroa Beach, or, if you’re more adventurous, go kayaking. Sip local wine. Hike along the cliff tops and through the forests. History buffs will love the World War II gun emplacements and system of underground tunnels at Stony Batter walkway. At the end of the day, hop the ferry back to Auckland.
Once back in Auckland, drive north to Warkworth for your final excursion. Stop in Waiwera to see the hot spring and Puhoi for a cheese snack. End up in Warkworth on the banks of the Mahurangi River. Go surfing at Tawharanui. Enjoy the scenery on the drive back to Auckland, from which you will take your flight to your next destination.
