Top Sites in Seoul, South Korea

The capital of South Korea is also by far its largest city. It is split in two by the Han River. The Yellow Sea lies to the east. Seoul is a great place to visit year round. Seoul blends ancient traditions with modern technology and culture. Seoul is an active city and one of the most popular destinations in Asia.

1. Gyeongbokgung Palace

Built in 1395 by the Joseon Dynasty, it was destroyed by Japanese invasion in 1592.  It was later restored and now encompasses 4,414,000 square feet and 5,792 rooms. Much of it has been turned into a museum and it is the most visited spot in Seoul by foreign tourists.

2. Seoul Museum of History

One of the most visited museums in the world offers a great collection of Korean artifacts.

3. Changdeokgung Palace

Built in 1405 as one of the Five Grand Palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, it was the seat of power for over 250 years and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided tours of the Huwon, or Secret Garden, are an absolute must.

4. Jongmyo

A Confucian shrine dedicated to the members of royal families of the Joseon Dynasty that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5. Lotte World

The world’s largest theme park. You could spend days and not even reach a quarter of the rides.

6. Mount Bukhan

Just north of Seoul, this mountain hosts the most visited national park per square foot in the world. It is a great place to go hiking.

7. Dongdaemun Market

A sprawling market filled with 20 malls and 30,000 shops.

8. Kimchi Field Museum

Taste the spicy national dish and get a hands-on cooking lesson in this unique museum.

9. DMZ

The demilitarized zone to the north is a treacherous place but worth seeing as it serves as a reminder of the perils of war.

10. Bukchon Village

A quiet, residential village in the suburbs is home to many hanoks, or wooden houses, and retains its traditional Korean culture.

11. Cheonggyecheon Stream

Despite its location off busiest road in Seoul, Sejongro, this 3.6-mile long stream is exquisitely tranquil.

12. Insadong

A market that sells both traditional and modern Korean art.

13. N Seoul Tower

One of the tallest skyscrapers in Asia, it offers the best panoramic view of Seoul.
