Best Places to See in Autumn
We've all planned and taken vacations during summertime, but did you know that some of the best trips you could make are in autumn? It's a time of changing leaves and temperature, a time for harvests and festivals. Here are a few of the most recommended places to visit between the months of September and November.
Between September and October, Tuscany is still warm and beautiful, but it's also home to a very rich wine harvest and festival. Wherever you go, you can be sure you'll find plenty of chances to taste the region's famous Chianti wine. And if you're looking for an exciting festival, then try the Chianti Grape Festival in the town of Impruneta, held every year on the last Sunday of September, with nearly 800 wines to taste and plenty of folk dancing and costumes!
Norway and its neighboring countries are usually lovely places to visit this time of year, but in northern Norway, tourists can find a real visual spectacle. Just prior to the start of the winter solstice, you can see the famous northern lights (aurora borealis), rippling across the sky as the night grows longer each day. The Norwegian cruise line Hurtigruten provides tours to see the northern lights from Bergen to Kirkenes, beginning in early September.
In central Mexico is a small town that isn't much to look at except for one special time of the year. Around late October and early November is the famous Mexican holiday known as Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), when families honor their deceased friends and relatives with elaborate parties and leaving gifts at gravestones and makeshift altars. On Pátzcuaro Lake is a small island called Janitzio reachable by boat, where the most sensational celebrations and dances take place.
In November, Cambodia is home to one of the most breathtaking spectacles you'll see all year. Over a million people come to see the annual Water Festival at the Tonlé Sap lake, as Cambodians celebrate the New Year. This 3-day event marks the river's change in direction, as it normally flows upstream during the rainy season. You can also find a good New Year's celebration in the temple at Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world.
The Canary Islands
While this tropical locale seems ideal for summer, it's actually much more tolerable to visit the Canary Islands once autumn begins. The wind and the heat will have dropped to make it an enjoyable get-away spot from work and other worries. These Spanish islands feature plenty of opportunities to go hiking through banana tree groves and lush valleys or to just relax at one of the many beachside hotels. If you want an amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean, then take a hike up to Montana del Viso on the island of Gran Canaria.
If you can only visit one place in the autumn season, then it has to be New England. The woodlands of the American Northeast are positively beautiful this time of year, exploding with brilliant hues of red, orange, and gold. You'll find no shortage of stately farms, parks, and leaf-scattered towns, all laid out from the city of Boston to the coasts of Maine. The weather is usually lovely, though be prepared for storms around November.
