Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Upon arrival in Lima international airport, you will be assisted to your domestic flight to Arequipa. Known as the “White City”, Arequipa is located in southern Peru at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet and is surrounded by the towering peaks of El Misti, Chachani, and Picchu Picchu.

Day 2

Arequipa - Colca

Following breakfast transfer to Colca Canyon one of the deepest canyons in the world. This remarkable drive takes you through Inca and pre-Inca terracing, which will astound and amaze. Spend today enjoying the sights of Colca Canyon. The canyon is reportedly the deepest in the world, thought to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA. Unlike most of the Grand Canyon, portions of the Colca canyon are habitable, with pre-Columbian terraced fields still supporting agriculture and human life. Your guide will explain its significance and give you great insight into the people who inhabit it.

Day 3

Colca - Arequipa - Puno

After breakfast, you will return to Arequipa (journey 5 hrs) and transfer to the airport for your flight to Puno. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your Puno accommodation at Titilaka. Enjoy a delicious dinner at your hotel, and use the rest of the evening to relax.

Day 4

Puno - Cusco

You will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco and you will be met and transferred to Casa Cartagena for overnight.

Enjoy today at your leisure. Cusco is a beautiful city with well preserved colonial architecture, evidence of a rich and complex history. The city itself represents the center of indigenous Quechua culture in the Andes, and by merely walking the streets one sees the layers of history. Spanish colonial buildings erected directly atop Inca walls line the square, while the modern tourist nightlife flourishes in their midst. The city is surrounded by a number of ruins, the most impressive being Sacsayhuaman, the site of the 1536 battle in which dozens of Pizarro's men charged uphill to battle the forces of the Inca. Nowadays, Cusco is known for its indigenous population--often seen on the streets in traditional clothing--and its substantial tourist-fueled night life.

Day 5

Cusco - Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley Peru is understood to be the land that extends between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. This past heart of the Inca Empire starts just 10 miles outside of Cusco, and trips here reward visitors with incomparable Inca ruins, stunning Andes Mountains vistas, charming towns, a good climate, and plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the countryside. This full-day excursion includes a visit to the famous Pisac Market, Ollantaytambo fortress and surrounding ruins. After your day exploring the Sacred Valley you will make your way to Libertado Tambo del Inka for overnight.

Day 6

Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu

We take the train from Ollantaytambo, following the Urubamba river to Km.104 of the railroad, here we cross a footbridge to begin our hike at the Inca site of Chachabamba. After a brief visit to this lovely ruin with its water channels and fountains, we start the four-hour ascent that will take us past spectacular overlooks above the great valley, then below a lovely waterfall near the delightful site of Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). We ascend through this largest and most exquisite of the Inca Trail sites, passing its chain of ritual baths and elegantly curved terracing, and then joining the main Inca trail. We follow it across a steep mountainside and up narrow stairways through lush, humid cloud-forest of giant ferns and broad-leaf vegetation. Suddenly we cross the stone threshold of Intipunku (Sun Gate) and encounter an unforgettable sweep of natural beauty and human artistry –a backdrop of twisting gorge and forested peaks framing the magical city of Machu Picchu. We walk the last half-hour or so down the royal flagstone walkway, past outlying shrines and buildings and through the heart of Machu Picchu. Return to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge near Machu Picchu's gate for overnight.

Day 7

Machu Picchu - Cusco

We enjoy an early morning guided visit to the fabled ruins, spending the day in both guided and individual exploration. After we visit the most fascinating features of this astounding and mysterious Inca settlement, some will want to take the optional hike to an amazing overview of the site, while others may prefer to investigate Machu Picchu’s multitude of hidden nooks and corners. In the evening return to Cusco by train.

Day 8

Cusco

Sadly, today ends your Peru excursion. You will be assisted to the airport for flight to Lima and onwards.
