DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Explore the Viennese Christmas Market

Among the plentiful Christmas markets in Vienna and the whole of Austria, this one probably attracts more visitors and attention than others. The market operates every day from morning till late evening. Perhaps it is best to visit in the night time when the Christmas spirit becomes stronger with the lights and the smell of the foods finely blending together. In this market, you will find mostly quality art and craft items and Christmas decorations, as well as tons of food stalls selling anything from roast chestnuts to specialty hams.

Day 2: Belvedere Christmas Village

It’s a kind of small but rather cozy and romantic market, and is ideal for couples, although there are a carousel and a reindeer train for the little visitors. It is set against the majestic Belvedere Palace, an incredibly beautiful landmark of Vienna, giving a palatial essence to the Christmas atmosphere. The vendors mostly sell arts and crafts, from jewelry to handmade soaps and other handcrafted decorations that won’t leave you unmoved. Several food stalls won’t let you go hungry either.

Day 3: Christmas Village Maria-Theresa Square

Located in one of the most splendid areas of Vienna, in the very heart of the city, this fabulous market is surrounded by several remarkable landmarks and Viennese sights such as the Museum of Natural History and the Hofburg Imperial Palace. Since this market is one of the largest in Austria, you will find lots of goodies, including traditional arts and crafts, all to a high standard. Long queues at the food stalls and crowded spots, especially in the evenings are, in fact, inevitable.

Day 4: Stephansplatz Christmas Market

Right in the heart of Vienna, in front of the huge cathedral of St. Stephens, one more Christmas Market is waiting to present you its traditional goodies. It’s not as large and as old as other markets in Vienna, nonetheless, it has high-quality products on offer. In the atmospheric wooden stalls, you will find from specialist chocolates to lovely candle holders to even jams and oils. Apart from Christmas delights, food and drinks, like roasted almonds, pretzels, or cupcakes, are also available.

Day 5: Winter at MQ

A somewhat different Christmas Market than the usual ones, Winter at MQ chooses to shift its focus on music and artistic light projections instead, which makes perfect sense, considering the venue. The festival takes place on the premises of the pretty modern Museumsquartier which hosts innovative exhibitions, workshops, and similar cultural events. During this festival, there are live DJs, open-air bars, captivating visual images projections, and as always, food and drinks. There is also an MQ shop to buy from, and an open-air design market as well.

Day 6: Freyung Christmas Market

Just a short walk from the very heart of Vienna and steps away from the Am Hof Market, you will find one more unique market which is actually an organic farm converted to a Christmas market for the festive season. The vendors here sell good quality handicrafts, including decorations and candles, while across the street, the farmers’ stalls have organic and local products on offer. Lastly, since a Christmas market is not complete without gastronomic delights, come hungry to enjoy some delicious poppy seed cake or mountain cheese.

Day 7: Spittelberg Christmas Market

This very special market is not the typical large market on a square or an open area, but rather, it spreads its stalls in cute alleyways and narrow streets, making the atmosphere uniquely cozy, but also jam-packed at times. Here, visitors will find the finest collections of arts and crafts locally or globally produced, among more than 100 stallkeepers. The market stands a pleasant 10-minute stroll from the city center, while, naturally, a number of culinary delights await you here as well.
