Travel Ideas in Barcelona

As the second largest city in Spain, Barcelona is big and beautiful. Over a million people live, work, and play in this magnificent metropolitan area, where classic Spanish architecture meets modern high-rise wonders with a dash of Catalan flair. The best time of the year to visit Barcelona is in August, so if you're thinking of a late summer trip, here's an itinerary you can follow.

Tourist Attractions of Barcelona

Try the Catalan cuisine.

Catalan dishes consist of a rich selection of seafood, salads, and soups, with the best paella (rice served with fresh seafood) you'll ever find. For more authentic Spanish dishes, your best bet will be to look for a tapas restaurant. Sit and enjoy the multiple appetizers like mouthwatering dates wrapped in bacon, albondigas (Spanish-style meatballs), or olives mixed with cheese.

See La Sagrada Familia.

In 1883, architect Antoni Gaudi started his work on the design and construction of this basilica of the Catholic Church. However, Gaudi died in 1926 and the cathedral has never been fully completed. Nonetheless, it remains one of the most eye-catching sights in all of Barcelona. Tourists come from all over the world to marvel at its curved spires, its elaborate façades depicting the Nativity and Passion of Christ, and its intricately detailed interior. There is quite simply no church or cathedral-like it anywhere else in the world.

Relax on a beach.

According to National Geographic, Barcelona has the best beaches in the world. Though the sand itself may be rough, the climate is warm and balmy, while the locals are relaxed and friendly. Some beaches specialize in offering patios and sections where you can enjoy a light meal or snack while listening to Catalonian and Spanish musicians.

Walk through Las Ramblas.

Pedestrians and avid walkers can spend hours strolling through this beautiful tree-lined walkway, located beside the city's busiest street. You'll find vendors selling food and drink (albeit at a higher price than elsewhere), along with street performers, fountains, and stylish boutiques for shopping.

Attend the Festes de Gracia.

Every August 15th, the Catalonian population puts on a week-long festival to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. You won't want to miss the fireworks, the live musical acts, tons of cheap and tasty food, and parties that go on late into the night.

Go hiking in Montserrat.

Though it shares the name of an island in the Caribbean, Montserrat in Barcelona refers to the multi-peak mountain just beyond the city (which is where the island got its name). As the first National Park of Spain, Montserrat is a great place for outdoor adventurers and avid hikers. Visitors may also wish to take the bus or cable car up to the Benedictine monastery near the summit, where you can enjoy a daily performance by the Escolania boys' choir.
