Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and also the country's media city. Its official name in German is Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, meaning 'Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.' Located on the north central are of Germany, Hamburg is also the country's major tourist destination, welcoming about 7.7 million domestic and foreign visitors each year. About half of Germany's newspapers and magazines started in Hamburg and also a major location of the world's aerospace industry.

Hamburg's population is 1.7 million (city) and 4.3 million (metropolitan), making this the second largest city in Germany next to Berlin and the seventh largest city in Europe. About 14.8% of the population are resident aliens. Out of these resident aliens, 22.6% of them are groups of people who only have a Turkish citizenship, followed by Polish citizenship. The people of Hamburg are called 'Hamburger.'

The city is experiencing an oceanic climate where the area's climate was influenced by sending the coastal air masses from the Atlantic Ocean. Snowfall in Hamburg is rare and only occurs once or twice a year. June, July, and August are considered to be the warmest months while December, January, and February are the coldest months. The average January temperature is 48 degrees F (9 degrees C) while the average July temperature is 63 degrees F (17 degrees C). The average annual precipitation is 29.6 inches (75.2 cm).

Hamburg is well known historically significant architectures. One of the most important landmarks in this city is the St. Nicholas Church. Considered as one of the tallest buildings during the 19th century and second tallest building in Hamburg, the St. Nicholas Church is now in ruins, as a result of air raid during World War II and now served as a memorial and an important architectural landmark.

The Hamburg Rathaus is the city hall of Hamburg and is the seat of the government of Hamburg. This city hall was constructed from 1886 to 1897 and currently houses the original government functions of the First mayor of Hamburg and also its parliament and senate.

Another famous landmark in Hamburg is the St. Michaelis Church. It is one of the main Protestant churches in Hamburg and the most famous one yet. This church was named in dedication to the archangel Michael. The church features a 132 m-high baroque spire completely covered with copper and has been Hamburg's featured skyline for many years. St. Michaelis Church offers 2,500 seats, making this the largest church in Hamburg.
